provigil-and-breastfeedingIf you are taking Provigil and breastfeeding or thinking of breastfeeding, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider about the potential risks. Since it is not known whether the medication passes through breast milk, breastfeeding women are typically advised to use caution and to watch for any side effects or changes in their nursing infant when taking Provigil.

Provigil and Breastfeeding: An Overview

Currently, it is not known if Provigil® (modafinil) passes through breast milk in women. Because of the potentially serious side effects that could occur in the nursing infant, the manufacturer recommends that the drug be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or thinking of breastfeeding and have been prescribed Provigil, make sure to let your healthcare provider know.

Provigil and Breastfeeding: What Does the Research Say?

No studies have been conducted on whether Provigil passes through breast milk. In general, very little is known about most drugs in breastfeeding, since it is usually considered unethical to study medications in women who are nursing. However, based on the chemical characteristics of Provigil, it is likely that the drug will pass through breast milk in humans.

If your healthcare provider decides that it is okay for you to take Provigil while breastfeeding, be sure to watch for any side effects or changes in your infant. Because the drug stays in the body for a relatively long time, it probably does not help to breastfeed and take Provigil at different times of the day (as is sometimes recommended with other medications).

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider About Provigil and Breastfeeding

You should talk with your healthcare provider about Provigil and breastfeeding. Each woman’s situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision about Provigil and breastfeeding that is right for you.
